The triumphant India Under-19 World Cup squad is to be accorded a rousing welcome in Bangalore on Tuesday after the team members touch down by a special chartered flight at 4 pm.
The team led by Virat Kohli defeated South Africa by 12 runs by the D/L method in a rain-affected final at Kuala Lumpur yesterday to regain the Under-19 world crown after eight years.
"The team will be brought to Bangalore from Kuala Lumpur by a special chartered flight of Kingfisher Airlines and will be taken from the airport to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in an open-topped bus," Suru Nayak, the cricket operations manager of BCCI, told PTI on Monday.
"BCCI chief Sharad Pawar [Images] and Vijay Mallya [Images] (Kingfisher Airlines chairman and BCCI marketing committee member) will be present to receive the team and felicitate the members. The (bonus) cheques (Rs 15 lakh to each player and Rs 10 lakh to each support staff member) would be handed over to them," Nayak added.
The BCCI is hoping that the Bangalore cricket fans would respond in a manner similar to what happened just over five months ago when Mumbaikars came out in droves to celebrate the victory of Mahendra Dhoni [Images] and company in the World Twenty20 Cup in South Africa.
On that occasion (September 26) it took the team more than five hours to travel a distance of around 30 km in an open-topped bus from the Mumbai airport to the Wankhede Stadium where they were felicitated.
