Sri Lanka [Images] easily beat England [Images] by 119 runs in the first one-day interntational in Dambulla on Monday.

Chasing the hosts total of 269-7, England were done in by some superb bowling from Farvez Maharoof, who dismissed the top order to finish with four wickets for 31 runs from his ten overs.

All-rounder Maharoof, who also excelled with the bat, clubbing three boundaries in his 22 from 12 balls near the end of Sri Lanka's innings earlier, was named man of the match.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene [Images] top-scored with 66 to guide the Lankans to a competitive total.

Sri Lanka chose to bat after winning the toss but were forced to graft hard on a slow pitch. The top order patiently laid a strong foundation with Sanath Jayasuriua (41), Upul Tharanga (40) and Kumar Sangakkara (38) all chipping in.

England captain Paul Collingwood [Images] was the tourists' most effective bowler, claiming two for 44 from his 10 overs.

Graeme Swann, a surprise choice ahead of frontline left-arm spinner Monty Panesar [Images], returned one for 47 from his 10 overs.
