Talented youngster Manoj Tiwary's maiden international tour has turned out to be a non-starter. The Bengal batsman has been ruled out of the entire one-day international series against Bangladesh after injuring his right shoulder.
Tiwary, who suffered the injury during practice on Tuesday, is likely to fly back home.
"He possibly won't be available for the ODI series," captain Rahul Dravid said, on the eve of first of three one-dayers against Bangladesh.
Dravid had words of encouragement for the youngster.
"I am sure we will see a lot of him in the near future," he said. "I am sure he will get through the phase and make a comeback very quickly."
Dravid said both Tiwary and the team are disappointed at the development.
"It's very disappointing and we feel for the youngster. It's not a happy situation. It's sad for a young kid who has come to play his first match to get such an unfortunate injury.
"But to look at it positively, he is very young and has a lot of cricket ahead of him."
Asked how Twari has taken the turn of events, Dravid replied, "He is very mature for a 20-year-old. Anyone would be disappointed, but he is in good hands. He got good help from [physio] John Gloster. The team, John and the Board will be behind him."
Asked whether Tiwary would be flying back, Dravid said that he hadn't discussed the matter with Gloster.
"But possibly I think if he is not taking any active part in the series then it will be wise for him to go and rest and get his injury sorted out and looked at by a specialist."
Dravid said that the team management hasn't asked for a replacement as there is sufficient cover in the side.
India are touring with a 15-member ODI squad.
However, Dravid said he would discuss the matter with chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar, who will reach Dhaka on Wednesday night.
"We will then see whether we need a replacement," he added.
