An unbeaten 67 by Pankaj Dharmani helped Punjab post 220 for six on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match against Mumbai at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.
Electing to field, Punjab lost four wickets with 100 runs on the board but Dharmani and Uday Kaul (25) put on 86 runs for the fifth wicket to steady the innings.
The hosts lost the wickets of Gaurav Gupta (8), Ravneet Rickey (46) and Dinesh Mongia (0) before Dharmani did the rescue job.
Punjab started well with openers Ravneet Ricky and Karan Goel (38) adding 83 runs before Goel was caught by Samant off Wilkin Mota. Gupta (8) and Dinesh Mongia (0) did not hassle the scorers much. Ricky, who struck seven boundaries, was caught by Swapnil Hazare (2-45) of his own bowling.
Kaul and Dharmani started to stich the innings but Kaul was caught at short fine leg by Mota off Mandeep Mangela (2 for 46).
Amit Uniyal (2) failed to give any support to Dharmani as he gave his wicket to Mangela, who was making his first class debut.
Dharmani, who hit 10 boundaries, found good support in Ishan Malhotra as he was unbeaten on 22 at stumps.
Besides Mangela two other players Mumbai's H N Shah and Punjab's Amanpreet Singh also made their debut in first class cricket.
