Made his Test debut against the West Indies in Brisbane aged 21 in place of Dean Jones in the Australia middle order, scoring 36 and 15 in a draw.

A former Australian under-19 captain, Martyn was made skipper of Western Australia aged just 23.

An errant shot in the Sydney Test against South Africa in 1993, which the hosts lost chasing a total of just 117, prompted his absence from the Australian side until the 2000 tour to New Zealand [Images].

Cemented his position at number four in the world's best batting line-up with his maiden Test century at Edgbaston on the 2001 Ashes tour.

A finger injury costs him his place on the 2003 tour to the West Indies before he scores an unbeaten 88 in the 2003 World Cup final victory over India.

Scored six Test centuries in 2004 but again lost his place after a disappointing 2005 Ashes series when he scored just 178 runs from nine innings.

Received a surprise recall for the tour to South Africa in 2006, scoring a match-winning 101 in the final Test at Johannesburg.

Courts controversy in November 2006 when he pushes Indian board president Sharad Pawar [Images] off the podium as his side celebrate their Champions Trophy final victory.

Comes under pressure for his place in the 2006 Ashes series in Australia after scores of 29, 11 and five in the opening matches in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Announces retirement from all first-class cricket on Dec 8, 2006 having scored 4406 runs at 46.37 in 67 Tests, and 5346 runs in 208 one-day internationals at 40.80.
