Umar Gul out with fractured back

August 26, 2004 14:58 IST

Pakistan pace bowler Umar Gul has been ruled out for at least the next six months following the diagnosis of three stress fractures in his back, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Thursday.

"He has been advised to take complete rest for the next six months to allow the fractures to heal after which there will be a re-evaluation of his condition," said PCB official Abbas Zaidi.

"Only than will the specialists decide if he needs to go through a rehabilitation process."

The 20-year-old made his debut for Pakistan last year but has not played since the second Test against India at Lahore in April where he took a match-winning five for 31.

He has taken 25 wickets in five Tests at an average of 24.56 and 19 wickets at 27.31 in 15 one-day internationals and is considered one of Pakistan's brightest bowling prospects.
