Answer 1: The distinction goes to Indian B B Nimbalkar who made an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar at Poona in 1948-49. Nimbalkar, who appeared in 80 first-class matches, never played a Test match for India.

Question: What is the lowest first innings score that has resulted in an innings victory in Tests?
Answer 2: Australia's 153 against South Africa (36 & 45) resulted in a win by an innings & 72 runs for the former at Melbourne in February 1932.

Question: Which fielder has the distinction of taking 50 catches for the first time in Tests?
Answer 3: England's all-round cricketer Wilfred Rhodes was the first fieldsman to reach the landmark of 50 catches in Tests. He did so during the 1913-14 season against South Africa at Port Elizabeth.

Since 1-10-2000 (that is in the last three years) Australian Jason Gillespie, Englishman Matthew Hoggard, West Indian Pedro Collins, and Zimbabwean Ray Price have dismissed him on the most occasions -- three times each.

Answer 7: Gavaskar and Vishwanath have been involved in the following 100-plus partnerships:

  • 159 runs for the third wicket v Aus at Delhi, 1979-80
  • 155 runs for the second wicket v the West Indies at Mumbai, 1978-79
  • 112 runs for the third wicket v the West Indies at Georgetown, 1970-71
  • 101 runs for the third wicket v Pak at Faisalabad, 1978-79
All the above matches were drawn.

Only on two occasions have both Gavaskar and Vishwanath recorded centuries in the same Test innings: Gavaskar (102) and Vishwanath (112) in the second innings v the West Indies at Port-of-Spain in 1975-76 (India won the match) and then against Australia at Delhi in 1979-80, when the former scored 115 and the latter 131. This match was drawn.
