England fourth, India sixthM J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle
India's rating in both test cricket and ODI cricket has now crossed the 40-point mark for the first time. India are still far from being the best; but they are certainly getting better.
The drawn series has been good for India. They now become sixth in the overall rankings with an index of 40.81, just over a point ahead of Sri Lanka (39.73). England (46.43) go down to fourth place behind New Zealand (47.03).
The current (as on Sep 11, 2002) home-away point tally of test playing teams is shown, below, in Table A.

After the ICC Champions Trophy, India play a three-test series against West Indies. The last time the two teams met, the series was drawn. So a series win this time will help India -- but not too much because India will play at home against a team that has among the poorest away records in recent times. Table G, below, summarizes the likely scenarios; we're assuming that West Indies can at best draw their matches against India.
