Mohandas Menon

  • The second Test of the on going series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk in Chennai will be West Indies' seventh Test match at this venue since their first in January 1949. The team from the Caribbean now has the distinction of appearing in most Test matches - seven - along with England than any other visiting team at this ground. The Windies had won the first Test match here in 1949 by an innings & 193 runs. However, the home team has a better record against the West Indies. They were victorious in 1975 (by 100 runs), in 1979 (by three wickets), and in 1988 (by 255 runs), when the last time the two met at this venue. The encounters in 1967 & 1983 were drawn.

  • In the six matches at Chepauk, the West Indian batsmen have scored 2568 runs, while averaging 26.20 runs per innings, with two hundreds and 12 fifties, while the Indian batsmen have managed to aggregate 2769 runs (avg. 26.88) with five hundreds and 12 fifties.

  • The Caribbean bowlers have captured 102 wickets @ 27.48 runs per wicket and at a strike rate of 61.45 balls per wicket and an economy rate of 2.68 runs per over in six matches. The Indian bowlers have taken 95 wickets @ 27.16, at a strike rate of 56.64 balls per wicket and an economy rate of 2.88 runs per over.

  • Sunil Gavaskar's unbeaten 236 in 1983 remains the highest ever at this ground, while Jeff Stollmeyer's 160 in 1949 is the highest by a West Indian batsman at Chepauk.

  • Leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani (8-61 & 8-75) in 1988 recorded the best ever bowling figures for an innings and a match, while paceman Andy Roberts' 7-64 in 1975 was the best for the visitors.

  • Finally, out of the 197 wickets (avg. 27.32) taken by bowlers from both sides at Chepauk, spin has accounted for 93 wickets (avg. 30.28) at a strike-rate of 68.51 balls per wicket, while pace bowlers have managed to claim 104 wickets (avg. 24.68) and have a strike-rate of 50.75 balls per wicket.

  • In the 25 Test matches played overall at this venue since 1934, spinners have been more successful with a total haul of 433 wickets (avg. 30.80) and have a strike-rate of 69.22 balls per wicket, while the pace bowlers have accounted for just 298 wickets (avg. 33.29).
