India retain fifth placeM J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle
India's 2-0 home win against West Indies wasn't very profitable since the Windies currently have the poorest away test record among all test-playing teams. India (41.31) gained 0.51 points while West Indies (31.50) lost 2.03 points. India remain fifth in the rankings, West Indies stay eighth -- and, on present form, will probably stay there for some time to come.
India now travel to New Zealand next month. Winning that 2-test series should be much more profitable. If India win 2-0 (which is quite unlikely), they would climb to the fourth place! England, meanwhile, can hope to overtake New Zealand even if they perform modestly well and salvage a few draws (remember, New Zealand are up there largely because of that drawn series against Australia last year!).
The current (as on Nov 3, 2002) home-away point tally of test playing teams is shown, below, in Table A.

Finally, we take a first look (Table G) at all the possible scenarios in the forthcoming India-New Zealand series. One wonders which of these scenarios would please John Wright the most.
