Letter of the Day
November 2, 2002
Mark, a magical entertainer
Mark was majestic, a magical entertainer. He saw his role to play
cricket in the spirit of enjoyment while providing a spectacle for the
viewing public.
He would have loved to score the 200+ scores but only if he could score
them in his unique style.
He possessed silky hands in the field, making it look all so easy -
similar to his batting.
If anyone had the good fortune to see Mark play one of his trademark
innings, it will linger in the mind forever - not the score, but some of
his exquisite shot making. I believe it will be these memories of Mark
which last longer than players who in figures alone, may have exceeded
him.
He was a quiet leader amongst the team with very astute observations,
about players, about the game, about any issue that is topical to
cricket.
It is always a sad occasion when a player who has played for as long as
Mark and achieved so much, finishes for whatever the reason - he will be
sadly missed by all cricket lovers in Australia and around the world.
