Hinds happy to revive Windies fortunes

West Indies opener Wavell Hinds was delighted after scoring his third Test century to lift his side in the third Test against India on Thursday.

Hinds, who was out for exactly 100, shared in a 172-run opening stand with fellow Jamaican Chris Gayle to raise hopes of a turnaround after the tourists' heavy defeats in the first two tests.

"It is a great feeling to get a hundred at Eden Gardens. I am very happy," Hinds told reporters.

"It is a highly regarded Test hundred for me. It is even better when you get it away from home."

Gayle was unbeaten on 80 as West Indies closed day two on 189 for three in reply to India's first innings 358.

"It is not as bouncy and not as good for the spinners as the previous two wickets," Gayle said, referring to the pitches used for the first two Tests.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took all three wickets in the day's final session, but leg-spinner Anil Kumble conceded 73 runs in 19 overs without success. The two had shared 28 wickets in the first two tests.

"We first tried to understand the bowlers," Hinds said. "We were a bit more intense and focused."

Hinds said there was pride to play for as his team fights to avoid a whitewash after arriving in Calcutta 2-0 down.

"You have to do what is required," he said. "You have to be patient and play.

"When you represent West Indies you have to be ready for whatever is thrown at you."
