Pakistan gain marginally, but stay fourth

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

It's been rather quiet on the ODI front, after Pakistan's 3-0 win against New Zealand in the home series a few weeks ago. But there's a lot of action ahead, starting with the five-game India-West Indies series commencing immediately after the fifth test at Kingston.

The current scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.

Let us now consider all the possible scenarios in the forthcoming India-West Indies ODI series. As Table G, below, shows, for practically every possible outcome, the relative rankings (India fifth, West Indies eighth) will not change. India can drop below England to the sixth place only if West Indies sweep the series 5-0. That, however, is not likely to happen. Given India's higher ranking, a 4-1 or 3-2 win for India appears most likely (although, as the Indians have repeatedly shown, it is not improbable that they will lose 1-4 or 2-3!).
