India continue to be fifth
M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle
The last time India met Zimbabwe in a home ODI series, India had won 4-1. So the poorer 3-2 Indian win this time actually helps Zimbabwe modestly; they gain 1.42 points to move from 14.54 to 15.96 in the Rediff ODI ratings. India lose 0.19 points to now settle down with a ODI RBI of 39.54.
Otherwise nothing much changes. India are still fifth, Zimbabwe still languish deep at the bottom of the table and Sri Lanka and Pakistan continue their battle for the third place (with SL again sneaking ahead).
The current scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.

It's perhaps quite a relief that this lacklustre India-Zimbabwe series is over (although Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Mongia and Mohd Kaif did glow brightly for India), because we can now concentrate on the seven-match Australia-South Africa series. The Rediff ODI RBI ratings will really fly up and down during this series, as Table G, below, shows. South Africa must win at least 5-2 to become the top ODI team again. So it is quite likely that Australia will retain their top spot.

In our next update we will discuss the Sharjah Cup 2002 featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand which too should be quite a series and which should, hopefully, settle the question about which is the third best team in ODI cricket.
