England still sixth; NZ still seventh

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

After going up 2-0 in their five-match series against England, New Zealand had a wonderful opportunity to gain the sixth place in the Rediff ratings for ODI's. Sadly, by losing the next two, and only managing to win 3-2, NZ ended up still being seventh.

In a curious turnaround, Pakistan and Sri Lanka again swap places -- with Pakistan regaining the third place by the tiniest of margins. Remember, however, that these changes effectively occur at the third decimal place. So, in all fairness, we should say that Pakistan and Sri Lanka are joint third. It is only when Pak meet SL (at Sharjah in April) that we will have a definite verdict. The current scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.

The current ODI rankings are shown in Table F, below.

TABLE F: FINAL ODI RANKINGS (as on March 4, 2002)
Country Performance index (RBI) Difference
18.2.02 to 4.3.02
Rank
Australia 65.01 +0.07 1
South Africa 63.90 -0.11 2
Pakistan 52.68 +0.48 3
Sri Lanka 52.39 +0.03 4
India 39.73 -0.22 5
England 38.33 -0.64 6
New Zealand 38.16 +0.32 7
West Indies 36.10 -1.05 8
Zimbabwe 14.54 -0.08 9

With the India-Zimbabwe five-match series about to start, let us consider some probable result scenarios and see how the ODI RBI's might change. We will consider the cases where India win 5-0 (a very feasible result, given India's greater strength, but not very likely), 4-1 (much more likely) or 3-2 (seeing the heavy weather that India made in the last innings of the Delhi test, even this result is likely!).

TABLE G: LIKELY SCENARIOS IN IND-ZIM SERIES
Result Ind ODI RBI Zim ODI RBI Remarks
Ind win 5-0 39.81 13.03 Ind (5), Zim (9), Pak (3), SL (4)
Ind win 4-1 39.73 14.54 Ind (5), Zim (9), Pak (3), SL (4)
Ind win 3-2 39.54 15.96 Ind (5), Zim (9), SL (3), Pak (4)

Table G suggests that this isn't going to be a terribly exciting series. We believe that the real sparks will fly when the Australia-South Africa series starts a few weeks later. We will discuss that series in our next update.
