India climbing rapidly

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

Till the 3-1 one-day series win against West Indies, India seemed incapable of going past the 40-point mark in the Rediff ODI ratings. The win in West Indies took India to 40.81 and Saturday night's win in the NatWest final takes India to an incredible high of 44.45. It isn't easy to climb so swiftly in the ratings; India is currently playing magical one-day cricket.

India have gained more by defeating Sri Lanka so convincingly. Before the NatWest series began, Sri Lanka were sitting pretty at the third place. But losses to India and England, and Pakistan's 2-1 win against Australia in Australia, have pushed the Sri Lankans down badly. SL (50.53) are still fourth; but they are now being seriously challenged by their Asian rivals: Pakistan (53.20) have already overtaken them to the third place and the amazing Indians (44.45) aren't too far behind.

The current (as on Jul 14, 2002) scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.

We are currently making a careful review of our procedure to calculate the Rediff ODI ratings. More specifically, we are considering how to give a higher weightage to wins in tournament finals. We hope to be ready with this procedure before the ICC Champions Trophy starts in Sri Lanka in September 2002. We don't expect things to change too much -- they shouldn't, because the ratings are already doing very well. Just as an example, our new proposed procedure would probably have taken India closer to 45, instead of 44.45, after Saturday's famous victory.

M J Manohar Rao is professor and director, Department of Economics, University of Mumbai, Mumbai; Srinivas Bhogle is scientist and head, Information Management Division, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.
