Pakistan could end up thirdM

Shoaib Akhtar's fine performance in Australia could well earn Pakistan the
third place in the Rediff ODI ratings. At the moment, Pakistan (53.26) are still
fourth, just over a point below Sri Lanka (54.49). But, given Sri Lanka's dismal
start in the Natwest tri-series, they appear all set to surrender their third
place.
India (40.92)'s good start, winning two matches out of two so far, ensures
that their fifth place is absolutely secure. But even seven straight wins will
not be enough to gain the fourth place. England (38.65) too appear likely to be
stuck at the sixth place.
The current (as on Jun 28, 2002) scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is

Notice that most teams gain a little because of Australia's defeats; this is
because, after two home losses, Australia's "weight" has diminished marginally.
M J Manohar Rao is professor and director, Department of Economics,
University of Mumbai, Mumbai; Srinivas Bhogle is scientist and head, Information
Management Division, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.
