Australia stay No. 1 in one-day ratings

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

As we indicated last time, even a 2-0 victory against New Zealand (37.87) in the VB Series finals doesn't help South Africa (64.02) regain its top place. Australia (65.01) are still almost a point ahead of South Africa. New Zealand stay at the seventh place. The current scorecard is shown in Table A.

The current ODI rankings are shown in Table F, below.

TABLE F: FINAL ODI RANKINGS (as on February 8, 2002)
Country Performance index (RBI) Difference
3.2.02 to 8.2.02
Rank
Australia 65.01 +0.15 1
South Africa 64.02 +0.25 2
Pakistan 52.66 -0.11 3
Sri Lanka 52.37 -0.09 4
India 39.77 +0.00 5
England 38.86 +0.02 6
New Zealand 37.87 -0.74 7
West Indies 36.19 -0.10 8
Zimbabwe 14.49 +0.01 9

The forthcoming five-match duel between New Zealand (37.87) and England (38.86) should be interesting. A close result would help India (39.77) stay fifth; if the series is one-sided, the winner could well overtake India. Table G summarizes some of the likely scenarios in the NZ-Eng series to be held during 13-25 February 2002.

TABLE G: LIKELY SCENARIOS IN NZ-ENG SERIES
Result NZ ODI RBI Eng ODI RBI India ODI RBI Remarks
Eng win 3-2 37.55 39.36 39.81 Ind (5), Eng (6), NZ (7)
Eng win 4-1 36.86 40.31 39.88 Eng (5), Ind (6), NZ (7)
NZ win 3-2 38.16 38.33 39.73 Ind (5), Eng (6), NZ (7)
NZ win 4-1 38.70 37.22 39.66 Ind (5), NZ (6), Eng (7)

So there are some interesting battles ahead. The earnest Indian supporter must wonder why his team is in the 5-7 race, instead of being in the 1-4 race. The reaction of the cynical Indian fan, on the other hand, is best summarized by the reaction we got two days ago: "India at No.5? You must be joking! We are at the bottom; even Kenya have defeated us!"
