Kumble to be
ICPA vice-president

M Chhaya in Kolkata | December 07, 2002 18:16 IST

The Indian cricketers' body will soon see an organisational revamp with the creation of two new posts and the induction of leg-spinner Anil Kumble as an office-bearer.

The Indian Cricket Players' Association (ICPA), which came into existence on October 31, will continue to have Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi as its president, but secretary Arun Lal will shortly be made a vice-president. Kumble will be the other vice-president.

The two vice-presidents' posts are being created for more organisational effectiveness. The post of secretary will be abolished, according to cricket sources.

The ICPA could also have a CEO, but for the time being Lal will look after the day-to-day working of the outfit.

Kumble's proposed induction into the ICPA assumes significance in light of an upcoming meeting between the International Cricket Council, Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian players.

The meeting takes place in Kolkata on Monday, to discuss the vital issue of players' sponsorship contract for the World Cup. Kumble will represent the Indian players in the meeting, to be attended by BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, ICC's World Cup Contracts Committee, Justice Ahmad Ebrahim and ICC General Manager - Cricket, David Richardson.

Senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have objected to the ICC's Players' Terms that will prohibit them from endorsing for their personal sponsors for a stipulated period of time before and after a tournament.

The sponsorship issue is believed to be the main reason for India failing to announce its 30-member squad of World Cup hopefuls by the ICC-set deadline of November 30. The BCCI is expected to announce the probables after Monday's meeting.

Dalmiya has already had a round of talks on the issue with the senior players before they departed for New Zealand last week.
