Sri Lanka regain third place

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

The battle for the third place in ODI cricket between Pakistan and Sri Lanka continues. By winning the Morocco Cup, Sri Lanka (52.76) have again edged past Pakistan (52.41).

But if Pakistan, with Shoaib Akhtar returning, can win a few against Australia in Kenya, they could become No. 3 all over again. Sri Lanka, then, must fancy their chances in the ICC Champions Trophy at home ... although Jayasuriya's likely absence will be a big blow.

South Africa (59.49) have dropped below the 60-mark for the first time since we introduced the Rediff ODI ratings. This must surely be a matter of some concern for them although they remain firmly entrenched at the second place behind Australia (69.03).

The current (as on Aug 22, 2002) scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.
