Goodwin declines Zimbabwe World Cup offer
Former international batsman Murray Goodwin said on Thursday he had turned down an offer to play for Zimbabwe, the country of his birth, at next year's World Cup.
The 29-year-old Goodwin, who has been representing English county side Sussex this year as an overseas player, released a statement on Thursday to say he would remain with the Western Australia state team for the 2002-03 season.
"The ZCU (Zimbabwe Cricket Union) had approached me earlier this year seeking an indication as to my interest in playing in the World Cup," he said.
"I said no to that approach and that I would not consider playing for Zimbabwe if I have to live there.
"I also have no intention of living in England, even though I have one year (2003) left on my contract with Sussex.
"I have a contract with Western Australia and consider myself a valued player.
"I am looking forward to the coming Australian season with the Warriors (Western Australia)."
Goodwin has not represented Zimbabwe for two years, having played his last Test against England at Trent Bridge in June 2000 when he was named man of the match following scores of 11 not out and 148 not out.
The right-hander hit three centuries and eight fifties during his 19 Test-career at an average of 42.84. He also played 71 one-day internationals for Zimbabwe.
