Sri Lanka are now the third best ODI teamM J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle
Although they lost the final at Sharjah to Pakistan, Sri Lanka still
performed well enough at Sharjah to strengthen their grip on the third place in
the Rediff ODI rankings. Sri Lanka (54.23) are now three points ahead of the
fourth-placed Pakistan (51.23). India (39.60) remain fifth and New Zealand
(38.44), who needed just a second win at Sharjah to overtake India, now stay
seventh.
The current scorecard for the major ODI playing teams is shown in Table A.

The outcome of the ongoing Pakistan-New Zealand series will have practically
no impact on the ratings. The last time the two teams met in a series in
Pakistan, Pakistan had won 2-1. If they win 2-1 again, the rankings will remain
unchanged. Even if Pakistan win 3-0, they will climb only to 51.77 -- still well
behind Sri Lanka -- because defeating a team like New Zealand (with a rather
poor ODI away record) at home is really no big deal.
M J Manohar Rao is professor and director, Department of Economics,
University of Mumbai, Mumbai; Srinivas Bhogle is scientist and head,
Information Management Division, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.
