Final ODI, India v South Africa
Rahul Dravid's 77 was the joint fifth highest score made by a
wicket-keeper against South Africa. The highest still remains as the 108 by
New Zealander Adam Parore at Centurion on 11-12-1994. However it was the
highest by an Indian keeper against South Africa. MSK Prasad's 63 at Nairobi
on 3-10-1999 was the previous highest.
Dravid now extends his excellent record with the bat (while keeping
wickets) to 420 runs (avg. 52.50) in 10 matches and 9 innings, which also
includes two hundreds and one fifty. His batting average of 52.50 is now
the best among all keepers who have aggregated at least 400-plus runs as a
keeper-batsman. Zimbabwe's Andy Flower with 5424 runs and with a batting
average of 34.55 is the next best.
Dravid during his above innings reached an aggregate of 2000 runs while
appearing in his 62nd day-night LOI match of his career. He becomes the
fourth Indian, after Tendulkar (3943 runs in 94 matches); Ganguly (2753 in
75) and Mohammad Azharuddin (2273 in 83) and the 20th batsman overall to do
so in a day-night encounter. Dravid now aggregates 2021 runs.
Justin Kemp's 3-20 was his best bowling performance of his career in his
11th match. His previous best was the 3-54 against the West Indies at St
George's, Grenada on 6-5-2001.
During their partnership of 80 runs the South African pair of Gary
Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs went past the partnership aggregate of 2000
runs for the first wicket to became the first South African pair and the
eighth overall to do so. The pair at the end of the match has an aggregate
of 2062 runs (avg. 46.86 per innings) while batting together as openers in
47 innings.
This was India's 35th tournament final. They have now lost in the final
on 18 occasions, although it has won 17 titles. This loss was India's ninth
tournament defeat in a row in a final since April 1999. Incidentally India's
last tournament win came in November 1998 at Sharjah.
Meanwhile South Africa playing its 16th tournament final won its 11th
title.
South Africa has now won five titles at home; two in Kenya; and one each
in UAE, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Singapore.
South Africa's previous tournament win before this one, came in August
2000 at Singapore.
South Africa has now won four matches in a tournament final against India
out of the five such matches played between the two teams. The only loss it
suffered against India was during the Titan Cup final in November 1996.
