Eighth ODI, South Africa v Kenya

Mark Boucher was appearing in his 100th match for South Africa. He becomes the 10th South African and the 114th player in LOIs to do so.

Gary Kirsten (124, when on 62) became the first South African and the 20th batsman to aggregate 6000 runs in LOIs. He now has 6062 runs (avg. 41.81) in 160 matches and innings.

The second wicket partnership of 209 runs between Kirsten and Neil McKenzie was South Africa's third highest for any wicket in LOIs. The country's top two partnerships remain as the 235 (for 1st wkt) between Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs against India at Kochi on 9-3-2000 and the 232 runs (for 4th wkt) between Daryll Cullinan and Jonty Rhodes against Pakistan at Nairobi on 29-9-1996.

However the Kirsten-McKenzie partnership was South Africa's best for the 2nd wicket against any team in LOIs, obliterating the 179 runs put on by Gibbs and Jacques Kallis against the West Indies at St John's earlier this year on 2-5-2001.

The above partnership was the second highest ever against the Kenyans. The best still remains as the unbeaten 237 between Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar for the 3rd wicket at Bristol on 23-5-1999. However it was the best by any team for the second wicket against Kenya bettering the unbeaten 159 between England's Naseer Hussain and Graeme Hick at Centerbury on 18-5-1999.

Although this was the 17th match to be played at this ground, the most matches that has hosted LOI matches than any other grounds in South Africa, the hundreds by Kirsten (124) and McKenzie (131 not out) were the only the second and third hundreds to be scored here after the first by New Zealand's Roger Twose (103) against South Africa on 4-11-2000.

Mark Boucher (51 not out from 20 balls) who reached his 50th run in just 19 balls recorded the fourth fastest individual 50 in LOI history.
The others quicker than the South African were:
17 balls - Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya (v Pak at Singapore, 7-4-1996),
18 balls - Australian Simon O'Donnell (v SL at Sharjah, 2-5-1990) and
18 balls - Pakistani Shahid Afridi (v SL at Nairobi, 4-10-1996).
Incidentally Boucher's effort was the fastest by a wicket-keeper. Australian Wayne Phillips during his innings of 53 against New Zealand at Wellington on 26-3-1986, reached his 50th run in 26 balls! Meanwhile, it was by far, the fastest fifty by any South African batsman bettering the 30-ball fifty by Gibbs during his innings of 125 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo a month ago on 23-9-2001.

The wicket of Ravindu Shah was Shaun Pollock's 100th on home soil. He joins six other bowlers who have had the distinction of taking 100 or more wickets at home. Australian Craig McDermott (125 wickets in 88 matches) has the maximum such wickets.

When he held the last catch of Brijal Patel, Boucher became the second South African (after Dave Richardson with 165 dismissals) and the ninth keeper in LOIs to take 150-plus dismissals. Boucher playing in his 100th match now has 144 catches and six stumpings to his credit.

South Africa's total of 354-3 was the eighth highest ever recorded in LOIs. It was South Africa's second highest after the 363-3 it made against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo earlier last month on 23-9-2001. However it was the highest ever team score made on South African soil bettering the 324-4 by the home team against New Zealand at Centurion on 25-10-2000.

The South African total was the second highest ever recorded against Kenya. The record 398-5 by Sri Lanka at Kandy on 6-3-1996 remains the highest.

This victory by 208 runs was South Africa's biggest in terms of runs in LOIs. Their previous biggest win was by 202 runs also against Kenya at Nairobi on 3-10-1996.

Playing in his 35th match of his career, Neil McKenzie won his fourth man of the match award.
