Australia win first Test against South Africa

Australia beat South Africa by 246 runs in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series when South Africa collapsed to 128 all out 10 minutes before tea on the fifth and final day.

The Proteas resumed their second innings on 17 for two, chasing an improbable 375 for victory, but were unable to salvage a draw as the last eight wickets tumbled for just 111 runs.

The total was their second lowest against Australia since they were readmitted to world cricket in 1992.

Leg spinner Shane Warne captured three wickets to finish with eight in the match. Glenn McGrath also took three and Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee two apiece.

The second Test in Melbourne starts on December 26 with the final Test in Sydney beginning on January 2.

Australia are ranked first in the Test world championship with South Africa second. Australia need to win the series to retain top place.
