Narvekar's bail plea rejected

Goa Cricket Association president Dayanand Narvekar and secretary Vinod Phadke's applications for anticipatory bail in the sale of fake tickets -- for the India-Australia one-day international in Goa on April 6 -- case, were rejected on Saturday. However, the court stayed the operation of its order till the evening of April 23 and directed that the duo should not be arrested till that time.

South Goa Sessions Court Judge N A Britto granted the stay after GCA president Dayanand Narvekar and secretary Vinod Phadke made applications to give them a week's time to move a higher court against the order, Goa Superintendent of Police I D Shukla said.

The police remand of both former GCA treasurer Rama Shankardas and ticket contractor Fallari, who are under arrest, was also extended by the court by four days, he informed.

Narvekar, a former Goa deputy Chief Minister, had moved the South Goa Sessions court seeking anticipatory bail after police began its investigation into the fake tickets scam. He is among several GCA executive committee members who have been questioned by the police in connection with the case.

The court had earlier directed the police not to arrest Narvekar till the disposal of his anticipatory bail application.
