'The future is bright with Shourie'

Mumbai, February 5, 2003: 'We are hitting a sweet spot. If we get our politics right, we should do well,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.

prasad : Hello sir Good evening
Ramesh S Damani : Hello everyone. Thanks for joining. Let's start.

equitygains : I AM HOLDING 2000 SHARES OF MTNL@92WHAT'S ITS FUTURE
Ramesh S Damani : With Mr Shourie in charge, it is brighter.

Sandy : What will be the repurcussions of US attack on Indian economy ingenerral and stock mkts in particular in view of Pres Bush threatening to use nuclear arms against Iraq?
Ramesh S Damani : In the event of a nuclear war anywhere in the world, forget about equity and move to gold.

vikas : Please analyse TATA HONEY and TATA INFOTECH results for all of us
Ramesh S Damani : tata honewywell is a lumpy coin terms of earnings. Q4 is thebig qtr for it.Tata infotech has potentialbut results will stillbe challenging.i am holding botth these stocks

Sandy : What is ur opinion abt investing in ONGC & GE Shipping in view of the potential IRAQ war?
Ramesh S Damani : ONGC would benefit due to higher oil prices. GE Shipping would suffer due to lack of movement due to war.

vikas : how is E-SERVE and TVS-E results. Is E-SERVE growing
Ramesh S Damani : e-serve results were good, growth and profitabality are back. TVSE is not out of the woods.

baracuda : e-serve has finally shown qrt on qrt gr are yu happy and can one add more now almost40%
Ramesh S Damani : I think so. The infrastructure is in place for faster growth in the next 2-3 quarters.

vikas : We want to know your startegy , are you buying or holding or selling your stocks during this uncertain period?what should all of us do ?
Ramesh S Damani : I am adding slowly. I would like to be 90 per cent invested before the Budget.

ShaileshBagri : Uncle, after the painful blow to PSU's by the failure of disinvestments, are you still optimist for a revival from the govt. in this budget. If yes, your views for PSU.
Ramesh S Damani : I think with Mr Shourie gaining power, it is a big plus. CMC stake will soon be sold. Shipping, HPCL are back on track.

sudipto : Sir, what about reliance, can i start buying now or wait ? i had already 200 shares at @298
Ramesh S Damani : It seems a good time to be long on Reliance. I own some shares.

baracuda : isnt it obivious from mcdowells results that vijay mallaya is siphoning out profits from mcdowell otherwise where did all the profit go
Ramesh S Damani : That cannot be proved. However, it seems that the results continue to be poor.

udh : Dear Sir,Are we certain that war will start in Middle east adn the market will go down then adn then that would be the right time to buy? or should we keep buying even now also? thanks.
Ramesh S Damani : These things are hard to predict. I think market offers good value. We should buy it.

Sandy : Uncle I am 15 yrs old I have some funds which share shud I purcase Uncle?
Ramesh S Damani : Buy a stock that interests you. Do you go to Barista? Then you could buy Tata Coffee.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : Finally the Alliance nightmare has turned into a dream. The Fund will stay back into India. Market rumors suggest that due to the heavy redemption the Value of assets fell down and as HDFC was to pay a certain percentage on total assets the sale become less attractive for Alliance and hence they stayed put. I strongly feel that the fund would be putting in more funds and viewing India more aggressively at least through its proprietary channel. This is so because the "BUY INDIA' story is more attractive to them now and they continue to see inherent strength in the market.. Can we see this as a macro tool that would take the Alliance stocks to newer heights. Analyze this with specific reference to HTMT as I hold HTMT in decent quantity. Your opinion?
Ramesh S Damani : That is too sweeping a conclusion to come to. Individual funds can move markets but not sustain the move. Around Rs 240 HTMT is no value buy. I still own some though.

alphonsad : mr damani a request , please tell ur views regarding digital
Ramesh S Damani : Stock is too volatile for retail traders. It is good for trading, not investing.

ram : Sir,We did once discuss about gold some one year back.We proved to be right.Financial sense.com is once again in limelight. If not gold why not steel.Esp co's related to steel like Sesa Goa/Vesuvius/etc
Ramesh S Damani : Commodities will have a better year as investors are getting weary about financial and tech assets. However these companies can hardly trade above yields. They are not value buys.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : Last week I was talking with you about identifying Companies that export predominentally to Europe as the Euro has gained against all currencies while the US Dollar is losing ground.I was reading a research report on. IPCA which clearly establishes that. Ipca gets nearly half its Rs 230 crore (Rs 2.3 billion) export turnover from Europe, and the company's shipments to the continent have been rising at 50-60% annually over the last three years. Any other that you have managed to identify in the software and ITES sector?
Ramesh S Damani : That is correct. Thanks for pointing it out.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : I-Flex came up with phenomenal numbers (annualized EPS would be Rs 64) how-ever the management says that earnings could be lumpy. I added to my position in I-Flex(at slightly lower levels). Can you analyze the stocks as a buy or a hold?
Ramesh S Damani : I think it is a buy. The company is going great guns producing good results. I have bought a small quantity.

ksaraf : as u are saying u will be 90% invested before budget market goes down after budget 90% of time so probability of going up is very low and what do u think inbudget can trigger rally as the major recommendation of kelkar report are opposed by rajnath commitee
Ramesh S Damani : It still can. If dividend tax and capital gains are not opposed by Rajnath Singh are passed, it would be bullish.

anand : Sir I THINK Q4 WILL BE VERY GOOD FOR SOFTWARE CO. COMPARE TO Q3 ESPEC. FOR ITENABLED . wHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THAT. ASSUMING NO WAR WILL U ADVICE TO BUY INTO THAT ? IF YES WHICH SCRIPT WOULD U SUGGEST TO BUY AT CURRENT LEVELS.........?
Ramesh S Damani : I am bullish on the whole market. Old and new and ITES. For people who like penny stocks look at these stocks. Man industries (Rs 22), United Breweries holding (Rs 23), Solectron (Rs 26) companies dont have any great earnings, but good potential. I own all three. They are low risk, but high return if you are patient. Nothing will happen in a quarter.

jjpandit : good evening sir, please tell me about sci/nalco/concor which one is attractive you found at cureent leve ti give more than 25% return
Ramesh S Damani : Nalco and Concor appear good. I own Concor.

WannaBePeterLynch : sir..even after Q3 numbers, you continue to be bullish on Mcdowell and Vijay "derby" Maallya claim to unlock shareholders value.a company controlling 35% spirit market and such poor number
Ramesh S Damani : Yes. It is a difficult stock, but the logic holds. It is an absolute value and I am willing to be patient.

vikas : Again your views on INFOTECH ENTERPRISES and Macmillan if its results is out
Ramesh S Damani : Results are not out for McMillan. Infotech continues to disappoint.

rajesh : Are you bullish on Pharma, if so which company (small cap) is looking attractive to you.
Ramesh S Damani : Ipca, which I own.

baracuda : yu appear to be very shy of tatahoneyplease analyse the results for us
Ramesh S Damani : The jump in turnover from 41 to 50 happened due to growth in ITES. Profit has not yet rolled in. The reason is not clear. They earn 35 per cent net margins in ITES.

bala : hi damaniji, can you kindly express your opinions on Himachal, global tele, silverline and pentamedia?
Ramesh S Damani : I would avoid them.

ShaileshBagri : Your message to the INDIAN CRICKET TEAM for the world cup?
Ramesh S Damani : Play up to potential. It is time Sachin carried the team. He has been disappointing. You can't be called "great and best" unless you have won a World Cup.

sudhir : Sir, What is the derivative list mean? because, Hughes Softwares share fell when the SEBI announced to take off some companies from derivative list. again it regained when SEBI said to trim the derivative list
Ramesh S Damani : Price and list are not related. So don't worry.

dee : Mr Damani, i-flex management was mentioning that SEBI regulation prevent them from issuing ADRs? do you know which ones?
Ramesh S Damani : Unfortunately no.

dee : Also, what are the chances of i-flex being included in sensex and nifty and if so when
Ramesh S Damani : No news regarding that. It could in the long- run.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : Ramesh babu I want your opinion on this: A couple of months down the line annalysts will be discounting 2004 and not 2003 with all the major IT/ITES shares on track for a 30 to 50% jump shall we see a rerating of sorts due to the changing year?
Ramesh S Damani : Pricing remains a problem. However, I do believe they can grow at 45%-50%.

AnandBhatt : Sir,you are happy with EServe results. So do you recemmend a strong BUY at current levels from 1 to 2 yrs pint of you.Should one go all out or buy about 50%.Pls advise.
Ramesh S Damani : I think so. My judgement tells me the company will start growing again strongly. It is expensive, but growth stocks always are.

rajesh : Sir, Yr comments on Max(I) , the results are not good. I would like to switch to E-serve. Yr opinion pl.
Ramesh S Damani : Max will still take some time. Hopefully they will get NY Life ITES business. e-serve is a separate buy call.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : Aftek is another product company that continues with its growth initiatives in the products as well as services segment (KP links are a deterrent though). The business is doing well CY Eps should be Rs 67 (Mp Rs 195). It was Powersafe, the UPS management software did well and now it is Jadoogar, its recent blue tooth product has been a hit with the vendors have you annalysed the stock?.
Ramesh S Damani : I am not comfortable with management.

udh : Sir, Is it better to buy SBI, Tisco & other banks and get medium returns or invest in ITES stocks like Satyam , wipro, HTMT, GTL HCL & Polaris now & get much better returns in 2-3 years? Is it right? Thanks.
Ramesh S Damani : SBI and Tisco are good. ITES stocks like Tata Honeywell, e-serve are also attractive.

ritu : Dear Ramesh, during last two-three chat sessions U told us that you bought Krebs and that it is extremely attractive proposition at current prices. Can you tell us a few positives of this company, especially in terms of its growth potential?
Ramesh S Damani : High dividend 75 per cent and general boom in generic exports.

bulldozer : 2 things ramesh. 1. Should I buy SSI now - after talks of the aptech buyout? 2. HLL - Hold/ Sell?
Ramesh S Damani : SSI seems to be crumbling avoidable.

raghu : i hold 400 shares of bank of india.should i hold or sell sir
Ramesh S Damani : Enjoy the rally.

mode : Whats your view on GMDC , its a dividend paying PSU is it a good hold
Ramesh S Damani : Yes and could be divested.

basantmyshasura : do yu see sbi going above300and what have yu have to say about margins being under pressure
Ramesh S Damani : Wait till it crosses Rs 330-350. It will double in no time. I own it.

kdsaraf : i can say very confidently that capital gain tax will not go and then market will come down post budget
Ramesh S Damani : That would take the fun off the Budget for me.

udh : Sir, In Pune you told me Satyam & HTMT ahve potential to grow up by 10 in next 2-3 years , in last chat you told it is Mcdowell whic has the potential of 10 times growth. Whcih stocks in the current scenario have the same potential? Thanks
Ramesh S Damani : HTMT, not Satyam if I recall. Mcdowell is still cheap. I own it.

AnandBhatt : dear Sir,PLEASE ANSWER THIS ONE.What do you think about Tata Honeywell results?Do you maintain I BUY at these levels after the results?Pls advise..........
Ramesh S Damani : I have answered it in the questions today. Also in your e-mail. It is good long-term holding. I own it.

kumarswamy : which are banking stock that you are holding
Ramesh S Damani : SBI and Karur Vysya.

jjpandit : sir last week business line news paper metioned regarding it&t would get 30 cr order for usa any information do you have ?
Ramesh S Damani : They have a Rs 12 crore order from Sainsbury London.

anand : SIR APART FROM STOCK MARKET , GOLD, PALTINUM GOING ALL THE WAY UP.STEEL PRICES R GOING UP , CRUDE OIL PRICES TOUCHING NEW HIGHS . TKAING ALL THE THING TOGETHER HOW WOULD U SEE THE IMPACT OF THESE ON INDIAN ECONOMY?
Ramesh S Damani : We are hitting a sweet spot. Jobs are being created, telecom costs have come down, gas has been found. If we get our politics right, we should do well.

AnandBhatt : SIR,PLEASE ANSWER THIS.I BOUGHT INFOTECH AT 210 FOR THE LONG TERM.RESULTS WERE VERY DISSAPOINTING AND THEY HAVE REVISED THE PROFITS SUBSTANTIALLY DOWNWARD IN THE GUIDANCE.SHOULD I SELL AT A LOSS OR DO YOU ADVISE TO HOLD.?THANKS
Ramesh S Damani : Hold at these values.

raghupati : Sir, can u tell if Seagate Shares are very good??
Ramesh S Damani : if you mean Seagata USA, yes.

sagar : dear damaniji, you e mail to anandbhatt only, it isnt fair, can i get your email addy please???
Ramesh S Damani : He is known to me personally.

kedy : I am a new commer in trading. From which trade first of all I should start? eighter Cash ,or Stock Options?
Ramesh S Damani : Start with cash.

basantmyshasura : on apure investment point of view how do like our old favorite beml who also has started growingwith the pm going to inagaurate the srinagar to kany 4lane motoway there will be alot of work for beml
Ramesh S Damani : Not a great value at Rs 80 as it was at Rs 20. Mcdowell is a much better bet.

raj : Sir,I have sold 1300 HPCL in derivative segment. Do you advise to cut the losses or continue?
Ramesh S Damani : Continue.

Surekha : Uncle I suggest that Mrs Kalpana Chawal shud be honoured with BHARAT RATNA

Ramesh S Damani : Market is not exactly flying.

ritesh : i have 200 birla 3m bought at 400. any advice on hold /sell?
Ramesh S Damani : Hold.

vikas : U still maintain that HTMT can give 10 times return. what made u think so
Ramesh S Damani : It's gone up from Rs 60 to 400. That is a good run.

narayan : GIVING NO ANSWER OF ME KINDLY TELL ME ABOUT CMC/MAX
Ramesh S Damani : CMC looks good, Max is for the patient guy. I own both,

AnandBhatt : Sir,do you play the derivatives market.I dont know much about it.Is it worth studying it,I mean would you rather invest in the derivatives market or the cash market?
Ramesh S Damani : Mainly in cash.

sagar : damaniji, its long time you gave any trading tip, so one is overdue,,,anything to be bought for this week, please answer in view of result season also over

Ramesh S Damani : Not been successful in that style.

Akshaya : Sir please answer my question I am TERRIBLY TERRIBLY confused? What would be the price target you would place for BHEL and GAIL. The former formeda doji at 193 after a head and shoulder pattern before falling and seems to be heading up again. Is this likely to be a typical case of double top? Should one sell around thye 190 level? GAIL on the other hand seems to be doing a channel move - can you suggest a target price?
Ramesh S Damani : I am not following these stocks. Certainly not in carrot stick form. Sorry.br>
kdsaraf : what is average stock life in your portfolio as too much churning of your portfolio do not give +ve results
Ramesh S Damani : I own all the above stocks. Core holding I hold on for 5-10 years. Infy, CMC, the like.

kavita : HI RAMESH ANY IDEA WHY SCI GOING UP SINCE LAST 2 SESSIONS
Ramesh S Damani : disinvestment

vijay_toshniwal1 : DEAR RAMESHJI, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT INVESTING IN BHARATI TELECOM FOR LONG TERM BASIS
Ramesh S Damani : Too early to make a long-term call on Bharti.

AnandBhatt : SIR,I DONT SEE THE TRANSCRIPT OF THE CHAT PUT UP NOWADAYS.IS THERE A PROBLEM.CAN YOU PLEASE BRING THIS TO NOTICE WITH REDIFF.
Ramesh S Damani : It is, just look for it. I will ask them to post the url on the chat.

Ramesh S Damani : It is too thinly traded for that kind of analysis. I have got a small quantity only.

kdsaraf : which are your favourite hi dividend yield stocks
