'I prefer SBI or private banks'

Mumbai, December 3, 2003: 'In the long term they will gain market share from the PSUs,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.

Abhishek   :  Biotechnology would be the next booming business after information technology in India, as per latest business reports. Would you recommend names of a few good companies dealing with biotechnology, having good growth potential and market, to invest in the near future?
Ramesh S Damani   :  Hello everyone thanks for joining. Let's start. It is a great field but few listed plays. Panacea Biotec and Monsanto are two indirect players. I own Monsanto.

raj   :  Sir after your recomendation all media stock especialy Adlabs film have reason too high wether one can expect correction .What is the right price to enter & exit.
Ramesh S Damani   :  Balaji, Mukta are good values at current rates. I own them.

TULIKA   :  DO YOU FEEL THAT MEDIA STOCKS ARE GOING TO GIVE HIGH SHORT TERM RETURNS
Ramesh S Damani   :  That is always difficult to guess. However, I think they have a bright future.

Kurious   :  UTI BANK HEADED FOR 200 BUCKS IN A YEAR. HSBC GETS PREMIUM VALUATIONS WORLDWIDE, JUST LIKE HDFC DOES IN INDIA. SIR, DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS VIEW
Ramesh S Damani   :  It could. HSBC would bring in some forward looking management.

chan   :  what about macmilan in the wake of online professional cources admission tesr??
Ramesh S Damani   :  I am not sure about that however, it is good value in this market. I remain convinced it is a good bet despite a bad quarter or two. I own it.

goindia   :  UB Rights issue details are out. Any views on the stock Sir ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I have not seen the rights document.

kvg   :  sir , If a company's ceiling limit is imposed with some x % . how long does this take to be removed
Ramesh S Damani   :  The exchanges have a formula for this, which is not public information.

goindia   :  Agree it has a decent run..but why is SBI languishing for such a long time... Are you still bullish ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  Patience. Good moves take time.

kcs   :  Sir,I heard HEG is the leader in Graphite electrodes. Since commodity market is pikcing up all over the world, do you see any chance of appreciation from this level?
Ramesh S Damani   :  Yes HEG, Graphite, Vesuvius are doing well.

sonia   :  Sir,In the round table organised by Capitalideasonline.com Rakesh Junjunwala was considering midcap phama stocks as sunrise sector. Al the shares have had a runaway..Any shares yet worth looking at???????
Ramesh S Damani   :  He did and he bought early, the stocks have some steam left but no new ideas in the sector other than Dr Reddy, Ranbaxy. I own Dr Reddy.

SINGARAJU   :  Sir.reg SPANCO.It seems like that this bus is waiting still for us to get boarded. But I am waiting for your guidance. Please do it sir. Also some words on it.
Ramesh S Damani   :  Some friends are bullish on it but I have not met them so no opinion.

BASANTMAHESHWARI   :  The Digital story has met an unexpected end.It is a disastor for the Indian investors. The short term gains notwithstanding it further discourages us to look at MNc's as long term investment bets.never the less does it not make the case for Indian outsourcing more solid as this US $ 73 billion parent must see huge potential to come out like that and spend Rs 1100 crs. Also accenture plans to double its work force and BFL software is the partner for this co.
Ramesh S Damani   :  I think they made a fair offer. They could have bled the company and then taken it over. If outsourcing grows it will add to the GDP, which is bullish for the stock markets. Outsourcing is a theme resonating throughout the markets,

malik   :  SIR, FOR GODREJ INDUSTRIES,YESTERDAY THERE WAS BLOCK DEAL OF 10 LACS SHARES.CAN YOU TELL WHO HAS BROUGHT SUCH BIG NO OF SHARES
Ramesh S Damani   :  Announcement should come in a day or so, such trades need to be reported.

sharad   :  Sir, What part of my foilo should I encash atb current level??? (If I have invested all my free money into equity at lower valuations)
Ramesh S Damani   :  Good luck and congratulations. I remain invested. Bull market may have a distance to go.

BASANTMAHESHWARI   :  I bought Vijaya Bank recently have you taken a look.Co. declared an interim div of rs 1 last week Motilal strongly recommends this stock and with Npa levels expected to fall below 1% at the end of current year and trading at 4 times currentearnings.. Bank also favours in the second top holding of Reliance Mutual fund after Sbi. Charts also are bullish.(higher tops and higher bottoms) Please comment
Ramesh S Damani   :  They are doing well. However, like I have said, I prefer SBI or private banks. In the long term they will gain market share from the PSUs

Uma   :  Damaniji, please advise few best scrips where I can invest it, pls?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I keep writing of my new ideas here. Keep reading the column.

sandhya   :  sir can i have ur call on Stride Arcolab and glenmark please advice
Ramesh S Damani   :  I own Glenmark and it looks good. As far as Strides Arcolab is concerned, I am not sure of the story.

SINGARAJU   :  TEXMACO.It may take time to move from current levels. But seems like having enormous potential. This is the comment from ARUN KEJRIWAL.Please elaborate your views on this co sir.
Ramesh S Damani   :  It is an interesting stock idea. Currently it is doing well and may be a good restructuring story.

sharad   :  If I have to restructure my foilo, should I move form samll grp-B,B1 to Index companies like SBI,ITC,TISCO,COLGATE etc???
Ramesh S Damani   :  Better to buy index, or index related scripts like Morgan Stanley, Spice.

Abhishek   :  I have some shares of Silverline Technologies and Pentamedia Graphics in my portfolio, for over a year now. These are either losing value or not appreciating at all. Would you advice me to hold on to them, or is their scope for gains in the near future, considering their current business and potential for future growth?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I have consistently said I am not bullish on these stocks.

sonia   :  Sir,I had invested in auto ancilliary & midcap pharma some one year back..like Shasun,Orchid.Aurobindo etc & Wheels India,Sona Koyo,Subros etc & I want to reap four fold profits in them & want to invest in a long term play...Plaese suggest companies having a future story of 5 year..(I do have Monsanto/Gillette/Ranbaxy/ABB/Siemens/SBI) Pl suggest other than these..Thanks as always.
Ramesh S Damani   :  Take a look at Balaji.

vikas   :  Do u still advocate buying UB holdings at 27 as it is not moving at all
Ramesh S Damani   :  I just added some today.

goindia   :  RJ also reccommended mid cap FMCG as a sector to watch out for..Is Nestle mid cap or large cap ? Also, Gillette made a nice move.. DOes it still look good to you ? Any other mid cap FMCG picks ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I own Nestle and Gillette, they both look good.

kcs   :  Sir,Do you have any favourites in NYSE or NASDAQ listed companies? Can you share some good scripts please?
Ramesh S Damani   :  Not really. Though I follow the markets in USA. I don't trade or recommend stocks in the US.

BASANTMAHESHWARY   :  DId you read the ENam report on gillete they say that to combat the problem of running water Gillete introduced Vector plus which is expected to do well but they have a target price of only 875.It is a good report though
Ramesh S Damani   :  Looks good. This is a stock that is just realising the potentail it had in 94-95.

Bhagirath   :  Inspite of being in a sunrise industrie why e-Serve has not shown Q on Q growth? Are they making investments in infrastructure thats why?
Ramesh S Damani   :  They have stopped some domestic business. Hence the slowdown.

sanujkadavil   :  sirare yoy daily adding ub holdings ..today i add 150.. we canot get 1.5$billion ub groups holding compny at 15$million..
Ramesh S Damani   :  Pretty much. Patience will pay.

Newbieatstock   :  sir can you please tell any good book by james grant
Ramesh S Damani   :  I can't remember a book but he writes a paper called James Grant Interest Rate Observer. He writes columns for Forbes.

KR   :  GOOD AFTERNOON SIR.... I RECENTLY HEARD ABOUT A COMPNAY CALLED CHAVIOT (RS.150).... ITS A JUTE PLAY... AND HAVE EPS OF AROUND RS. 70... DIVIDEND IS INCREASING CONSISTENTLY AND LAST YEAR WAS 50%...... CAN THIS STOCK BE ENTERED IN THE LIGHT OF THE TEXTILE BOOM AND WALL-MART BUZZ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I am sorry I have not followed this company.

mANOJ   :  Damaniji,What has happened to MINDTECK.The CEO has resigned. also no mergers & acquisitions are taking place ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  No recent news to report.

kcs   :  Sir,You look bullish on software out sourcing... What is your call on software MID caps like Polaris etc?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I think tech may have made a bottom and now they may give good gains.

kunal   :  sir, how the bank shares look? specially BOB & JK BANK ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  J&K Bank may make a move like UTI Bank.

sharad   :  What is your views about Consumer Durables/Goods Companies any picks at current Level???
Ramesh S Damani   :  They should be getting ready to boom.

Newbieatstock   :  Its someting i dont understand, although people do and recommend stocks over the next year or the year before that, none the less the market discounts or factors that news in the short term more often than not, why is that ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  Market is a mosaic that keeps changing, it is difficult to say what it values at what time. The trick is to buy good stocks and leave aside all the rest particularly timing, volatility etc.

Abhishek   :  I am getting good gains in Tata Telecom, Reliance Capital and Mid-day multimedia. Should I hold on to them or exit?
Ramesh S Damani   :  If you are happy, sure.

sureshmakhij   :  , sir ji goodevening what about pentamedia its has some tie up with walmart why this stock is noy rising
Ramesh S Damani   :  No idea.

ushti   :  shall thank u for your views on long terms prospects of i flex & e serve; at what price i should sell; have acquired these scrips not by study but by intuition; pl advise thk u ; i value your opinion most among all analysts!!
Ramesh S Damani   :  Despite some pain in e-Serve I would hold on. Rupee appreciation could be a big story overtime and we might see some painful quarters.

KR   :  WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, I SUGGEST YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT CHAVIOT... CAUSE THE FINANICAL LOOKS INTERESTING... BUT WE, SMALL INVESTOR HAVE LIMITATIONS AND CANT GATHER MUCH INFORMATION.... AND MOREOVER, IF WHAT APPEARS ON THE FACE IS TRUE... THIS IS THE KIND OF STOCK THAT YOU LIKE... PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT IT.... AND YES... YOUR VIEWS OF INDRAPRASTHA IPO
Ramesh S Damani   :  Sure will try too.

vinaydamani   :  hello ramesh ji vinaydamani here first i have bought mahindra ugi on ur suggestion at 20.90 and sold them tomorrow at27.45 thanks for the advice and i have also cleared ncfm basic module exam my question is on reliance and satyam when should i buy them if they should be bought at such high market.....vinaydamani
Ramesh S Damani   :  For trading you should rest on your own instincts, take a look at GAIL it seems to be trying to break out.

Kannan   :  Dear Ramesh tata honey well suddenly gave a upmove though u were not happy in the recent times And specific reason other than Bull mkt reason.. Heard Parent company increasing the stakes in teh company
Ramesh S Damani   :  Unlikley to increase stake, however, they should benefit from capex from oil and power sector.

Newbieatstock   :  sir hsbs taking a stake in uti is this not a great sign saying that india has finally arrived, which sector do u think international players would be intersted in, quite clearly banking and bpo is one of them, but which sectors do u think they would like to have a direct presence in india

Ramesh S Damani   :  Yes they do, look at ITC Agro tech.

sbn   :  sir what is ur opinion on Venkey India its basically a good share but could not move fast as last time it touched 300 and present perf is very good .

gopal   :  Damani Bhai , please answer this yaar sir, Videocon International had a break out , do u see anything interesting
Ramesh S Damani   :  They are doing well in the current year.

rao   :  why do the big traders in india keep a low profile, unlike in the west... is it bcoz the means used here are mostly corrupt ?
Ramesh S Damani   :  I don't think so, generally you attract bad attention being successful. In India we don't respect success.
