The compact hatchbacks and mass segment sedans have always ruled the roost in the Indian automotive industry and will continue to prosper in coming years.
However, in the last couple of years, the luxury car segment has evolved significantly and demand for premium and luxury sedans and SUVs has increased rapidly. Why?
Well there are actually two reasons, one, increased localisation of components, and, secondly, government policies that have made premium luxury vehicles affordable.
There are three 'genuine' luxury carmakers in India -- Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz. In their zeal to be No.1 luxury automaker, the German trio is toiling hard to ensure maximum penetration. Thus, they are rolling out products that flaunt 'reasonable' price tags.
They, however, still continue manufacturing SLS AMGs, R8 Spyders and M-Series for high-net-worth individuals.
