Rural jobs: Jairam Ramesh slams Maharashtra's apathy

Rising above party politics, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh pulled up Maharashtra on the implementation of various issues related to MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act).

In a letter dated September 12, 2011, Jairam sought Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's co-operation to entrust the responsibility of implementing MGNREGA schemes to the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.

Jairam said he was certain such a move would boost the pace of reforms as far as rural jobs are concerned.

The MGNREGA aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
