Indian states with highest per capita INCOME!

Per capita income in India has doubled between 2004-05 and 2010-11 to touch Rs 54,835 per annum. The PCI figure gives a fair idea of the standard of living of the people. India's per capita income in 2009-10 was Rs 46,492.

Per capita income is calculated by evenly dividing the national income among the country's population.

The size of Indian economy at current prices is projected to rise to Rs 72,56,571 crore at the end of the 2011, up 18.3 per cent from Rs 61,33,230 crore in FY 2010.

The provisional data for 2010-11 from a few states including Goa, West Bengal, Gujarat are yet to be released.

The details of State-wise per capita income (net state domestic product at factor cost) at current prices, as compiled and provided by the Directorates of Economics & Statistics of the States, are given in the following pages.

Delhi: Rs 135,814

Delhi scores high on per capita income and GDP growth rate. The national capital's per capita income is the highest in the country amongst the states for which the information has been released by the goverment. Its annual per capita income stands at Rs 135,814.

Backed by stable infrastructure and trade, Delhi's manufacturing and consumer goods industries have contributed to its economic success.

The tertiary sector, which includes services, trade, hotels, restaurants and transport services spins revenues for the state.

The gross domestic product of Delhi is $46.0 billion.

Goa: NA

In 2009-10, Goa's per capita income stood at Rs 13,2719.

The per capita income figure for the fiscal year 2010-11 for Goa has yet to be released by the government.

Tourism is the mainstay of the Goan economy. The state also has rich mineral wealth.

In recent times, apart from agriculture and fishing, medium-scale manufacturing too is growing quickly in the state.

Haryana's per capita income is at Rs 92,327.

It is one of the richest states in India with its gross state domestic product (GSDP) growing at a steady rate. Its GDP is $45.670 billion.

Manufacturing, business process outsourcing, agriculture and retail sectors contribute to the state's economy.

Gurgaon in Haryana has turned into an important industrial and financial centre.

Maharashtra: Rs 83,471

India's richest state, Maharashtra, is the second most urbanised in the country. It's per capita income is Rs 83,471.

It is the second most populous and third-largest state by area in India. It has a high rate of economic growth, and the biggest contribution comes from the services sector.

Maharashtra contributes 15 per cent of national industrial output and over 40 per cent of India's national revenue.

Maharashtra's GDP is at $190.310 billion.

Sikkim's economy is the smallest economy among all Indian states as per data for Indian states. However, the Himalayan state's per capita income is one of the highest at Rs 81,159.

Punjab is among the first few states in the country with 100 per cent road connectivity in rural areas.

The GDP of Punjab is at $42.110 billion.

The industrial sector is dominated by small scale industries. The primary industries are textiles, sports goods, manufacturing, and agro-based industries.

In 2009-10, the per capita income of Gujarat  was Rs 63,961. The government is yet to release the latest per capita income figure for the state of Gujarat.

One of the fastest growing states in India, Gujarat has seen rapid industrial growth.

The state has the world's largest refinery in Jamnagar, besides industries in textiles, petrochemicals, agro food processing, gems and jewellery.

Surat, India's diamond has one of the highest GDP growth rates in India.

Gujarat's GDP is estimated to be $90.650 billion.

Andhra Pradesh: Rs 60,458

Andhra Pradesh, India's fourth largest state gets much of its revenues from the services sector. Its per capita income is Rs 60,458.

The state banks on two major sectors - Information technology and biotechnology. Agriculture also contributes substantially to the state's economy.

Andhra Pradesh ranks second in India in terms of mineral wealth.

In 2009-10, the per capita income of Kerala was Rs 59,179. The per capita income figure for the fiscal year 2010-11 for Kerala has yet to be released by the government.

Kerala also known as God's own country depends mainly on the tourism industry and remittances from its people working abroad.

Kerala produces over 90 per cent of India's natural rubber, more than half of India's cardamom, and 30 per cent of coconuts and tapioca.

The state's GDP is at $48.630 billion.

Himachal Pradesh: Rs 58,493

Himachal Pradesh's GDP is $9.140 billion. Its per capita income is Rs 58,493.

It is rich in agriculture and hydroelectric resources. Agriculture contributes to over 45 per cent to the net state domestic product.

It has been estimated that about 20,300MW of hydro electric power can be generated in the state.

Himachal is also the first state in India to achieve the goal of having a bank account for every family.

Chhattisgarh is the tenth largest state in India. Its per capita income is Rs 44,097.

The 'rice bowl' of India, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. The highest contribution to the state's Gross State Domestic Product comes from the tertiary sector.

Chhattisgarh's GDP stands at $23.190 billion.

The state has many mineral-based industries. An electricity-rich state, it supplies electricity to other states. More than 80 per cent of the population depends on agriculture.

A state rich in natural resources, Orissa also has a large coastline. One third of India's bauxite reserves, a quarter of its iron ore and a fifth of its coal are in Orissa, making it a hotspot for mining companies.

Orissa's GDP is estimated at $34.270 billion, while its per capita income is at Rs 36,923.

Orissa was the second most preferred destination in the country for investments in 2009.

The state's growth rate was 11.4 per cent in 2009, the second highest in India. Yet, unfortunately the per capita income in the state remains the lowest amongst all states in India at Rs 20,069.

Over half of the state's Gross State Domestic Product comes from the services sector.

Bihar's GDP stands at $35.600 billion.
