One look at the pictures of the new Audi A6 and you can immediately spot the resemblance.

The car is scheduled to be in showrooms next year and it will be tough competition for all the fellow sedans in its segment like the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class.

Under the hood

The all-new Audi A6 will be offered in four different engines and there is talk of about five more being added to the list.

Among the engines that will be offered first are the 2.0-litre TDI, 175bhp unit and the 3.0-litre TDI mill.

The 2L motor will come with a six-speed manual gearbox and the 3.0-litre TDI will be a Quattro four-wheel drive with a seven-speed S-Tronic twin-clutch gearbox.

The Audi A6 will not get any petrol units, so the petrol heads might miss the blazing eight-cylinders in the new A6. But a V8-powered S6 might be able to pacify them in the future.

Design and features

The new A6 does have a resemblance with the big brother A8, but it is a tad bit shorter than the outgoing model.

However, a longer wheelbase gives the car more space to utilise. The car is wider and is built using Audi's MLP platform, which is why it has a shorter front overhang.

Some of the features that the new Audi A6 is likely to have are a new five-mode Audi Drive Select system, that helps adjust power steering assistance, throttle response and drivetrain settings, efficiency mode, optional S-Line suspension honed by Quattro GmbH, sports styling kit, et al.

The car gets engine stop-start as standard along with other economy-boosting technologies. Also, the car is lighter and its doors, wings, bonnet, boot-lid and bumpers have a lot of aluminium used in them.

The car has a light aluminium chassis and steel springs come as standard in Sport and S-Line and there are optional air springs available too.

The new A6 is claimed to be up to 19 per cent more fuel efficient and a hybrid petrol-electric A6 will also be launched in 2012.
