Hyundai Assan chairman Umit Karaarslan confirmed that the company is working on a compact sedan at the Izmit plant in Turkey. The car will use the next generation i10 components.

"We will begin to produce new and bigger versions of the i10, which will be set between the i10 and i20. As part of the same platform we can easily produce a sedan, so as soon as we release the other model we will begin to work on sedan production," said Karaarslan speaking to Hurriyet Daily.

The next generation i10, according to media reports, is premiering at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

An entry-level compact sedan is the only product that's missing from Hyundai India's portfolio. Sources say that Hyundai also plans introduce this vehicle in India with a compact diesel engine displacing 1.1 litres as a replacement to Accent.

The Izmit plant may look after the demand from the European markets while the Chennai one may produce for the Asia Pacific and African regions.

According to sources, the new i10 may also feature a turbocharged, direct injected version of the Kappa engine. In fact, at a powertrain conference in South Korea last October, Hyundai unveiled a 1.0 litre TCI engine that produces 105 bhp and 137 Nm.

With the new compact sedan, Hyundai has surely turned up the heat on the segment. With Honda Amaze and Mahindra Verito slated to be launched soon, we are surely going to see a lot of action.
