Makers of cars and bikes posted mixed results for August amid high inflation and rate hike worries.

While automobile majors like Maruti and Tata posted disappointing results, Ford and General Motors put in a great performance.

August sales: Down 13%

Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday reported 12.74 per cent fall in sales for August to 91,442 units due to the ongoing labour unrest at its Manesar plant that affected production.

The company had sold 1,04,791 units in the same month last year, Maruti Suzuki India said.

The Manesar facility rolls out MSI's high volume compact car Swift that has a waiting period of over three months.

The plant also produces hatchback A-Star and sedan SX4.

The total passenger car sales in the domestic market dipped 19.21 per cent to 63,296 units in August from 78,351 units in the same month of 2010, it added.

Hyundai Motor India
Aug sales: Up marginally at 51,030 units

Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Thursday reported marginal increase in total sales to 51,030 units in August, 2011.

The company sold 50,633 units in the corresponding year-ago period, Hyundai Motor India Ltd said.

Exports of the company grew by 10.5 per cent during the month under review to 24,35 units from 22,032 units in the year-ago period, the statement said.

In the A2 segment (Santro, i10 and i20), the company sold 43,687 units, while in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna), sales stood at 7,105 units.

The A5 segment (Sonata Transform) of HMIL witnessed sales of 12 units, while its new SUV Santa Fe attracted 226 buyers during the month.

August sales: Down 3%; Nano sales dip 85%

Tata Motors on Thursday reported a 2.84 per cent decline in total sales during August 2011, to 64,078 units with sales of its small car Nano falling by 85 per cent during the month.

The company had sold 65,954 units in the same month of 2010.

The homegrown firm's total passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market stood at 16,829 units in July, a fall of 33.25 per cent from 25,212 units in the same month last year.

August sales: Up 9%

Ford India on Thursday reported a nine per cent increase in its sales for August 2011, at 8,914 units.

The company had sold 8,172 units in the same month last year, Ford India said in a statement.

The sales were mainly on the back of new vehicle all-new Ford Fiesta and continued strong demand for the Ford Figo.

The all-New Fiesta went on sale last month and is the first of eight new vehicles that Ford is bringing to India by mid-decade.

Ford Figo continues to see a surge in demand as Ford India exported more than 1,500 cars this month, now exporting to 26 markets.

August sales: Up 14%

General Motors India registered a growth of 14 per cent in sales led by the 'overwhelming' response to Chevrolet Beat Diesel in August 2011, compared to the corresponding period last year.

It sold 9,050 units in August 2011 against 7,941 in the same month last year, according to a company statement.

The August 2011 sales comprised 4,681 units of Chevrolet Beat, 1,924 of Chevrolet Tavera, 1,301 of Chevrolet Spark, 667 of the Chevrolet Cruze, 161 of Chevrolet Optra, 203 of Chevrolet Aveo and 113 units of the Chevrolet Captiva.

August sales: Up 84%

Carmaker Toyota Kirloskar Motor on Thursday reported 83.82 per cent jump in sales for August at 11,693 units, driven by robust demand for utility vehicle Innova and its latest products Etios and Liva.

The company had sold 6,361 units in the corresponding month last year, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said in a statement.

TKM, a joint venture between the world's largest carmaker Toyota and the Kirloskar Group, attributed the growth to healthy sales of its utility vehicle Innova and latest sedan Etios and small car Liva.

The company sold 2,710 units of Etios and 2,824 units of Liva last month.

Innova recorded sales of 4,305 units. Premium sedan Corolla Altis and sports utility vehicle Fortuner witnessed sales of 913 units and 897 units respectively.

Suzuki Motorcycle
August sales: Up 39%

Two-wheeler maker Suzuki Motorcycle India on Thursday reported 39.12 per cent jump in sales in August to 26,897 units.

The company had sold 19,334 units in the same month last year, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd said.

"We have received very good response from the market to all our products.

The growing customer satisfaction among present owners of Suzuki products has led to a positive word-of-mouth in the market," SMIPL vice-president (sales and marketing) Atul Gupta said.

August sales: 14%

TVS Motor Company has posted a 14 per cent growth in overall sales in August to 194,898 units, compared to 170,735 in the same month in the previous fiscal.

The company said in a statement it continued to maintain its growth with contributions from all segments in domestic and export sales, with scooters taking the lead and exports witnessing a quantum increase.

The cumulative sales for months of April to August 2011 grew by 15 per cent with sales of 920,990 units against 800,789 units recorded in the previous comparable period.

India Yamaha Motor
August sales: Up 30%

Two-wheeler maker India Yamaha Motor on Thursday reported 29.64 per cent increase in its total sales in August at 39,490 units.

The company had sold 30461 units in the same month last year, India Yamaha Motor said in a statement.

In the domestic market, the company's sales stood at 29,934 units as against 22,683 units in the same month last year, up 31.97 per cent.

Exports of India Yamaha rose by 22.86 per cent to 9,556 units during the month from 7,778 units in the year-ago period, it added.

August sales: Up 19%

Mahindra & Mahindra's Farm Equipment Sector division on Thursday reported 19.12 per cent rise in tractor sales in August to 16,003 units.

The company had sold 13,436 units during the same month

last year, it said in a statement.

Domestic sales grew by 20.92 per cent to 15,059 units as against 12,454 units in the year-ago period, it added.

Exports during the month declined by 3.87 per cent to 944 units from 982 units in the corresponding period last year.

August sales: Up 25%

Honda Siel Cars India on Thursday reported the highest ever sales for August at 6,907 units, registering a jump of 25.17 per cent over the same period last year.

The company had sold 5,518 units in the corresponding month last year, Honda Siel Cars India said.

The sales during August was the highest ever for the month, it added.

"This remarkable growth in sales is fuelled by the sales of Honda City. The company sold 5,819 units of the Honda City in August, 2011, registering 35 per cent growth from the 4,251 units sold in August 2010," the company said.

The August sales comprised 600 units of hatchback Jazz, 330 units of premium sedan Civic, 132 units of luxury sedan Accord and 26 units of its sports utility vehicle CR-V.

August sales: Up 72%

Volkswagen India on Thursday reported a 72.5 per cent increase in its sales in August at 6,091 units against 3,531 units in the same month last year.

Compact car Polo and sedan Vento continued to be the backbone for the brand, with a total of 5,634 units sold in August 2011, the company said.

"Despite the current market conditions, we are pleased to be able to maintain our overall sales," Volkswagen Group sales India member of board and director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Neeraj Garg said.
