January 21, 2008 17:16 IST
Former President A P J Abdul Kalam mooted on Monday a virtual platform connecting the academia, industry and researchers in the country and abroad to make conceptual designs of Aerospace and Automotive research and development, a reality.

"I am visualising a "Virtual Collaborative GRID for Aerospace and Automotive Research and development" to enable design (become) reality -- a product life cycle management framework that will enable India realise its vision for the manufacturing sector and become competitive in the defence and the commercial market of aerospace and automotive sector," Kalam said in Chennai.

He was interacting with employees at the Satyam Automotive and Aerospace Centre of Excellence in Chennai on Monday.

This GRID would need to connect the academia, industry, R&D laboratory in the country and abroad with high bandwidth network along
with hundreds of work centres which would become the foundation for establishing the virtual collaborative design platform or centre, he said.

It would deal with full-fledged concept to reality product life cycle management environment for developing any type of aircraft, fighter, helicopters, digital cars, locomotives like trains, robotic cars, robotic payload for the space missions in a much faster through put with quality in a cost effective manner, he said.

"It is not just an interconnection of computers and networks but also an integration of everything that we do in science and technology, including the networking of the scientists and scientific minds, which will lead to establish a Virtual Collaboratie environment for conceptual design to reality leading to realisation of marketable systems and products in aerospace and automotive sectors," Kalam said.
