With the arrival of Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel, competition is hotting up in the segment. The first diesel car from Maruti Suzuki, Celerio diesel is pitted against Hyundai Grand i10, Ford Figo and Chevrolet Beat.

Appearance

Aesthetics is really a subjective thing and although Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel stands out from the crowd, its competitors -- Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and Hyundai Grand i10 are all well designed in their own way.

Structurally, Celerio diesel is the lightest of all the four hatches and that too by a long margin weighing 880kgs compared to 1027kg (Beat), 1025kg (Grand i10) and 1090kg (Figo). All the vehicles remain on par as far as exterior appearance is concerned.

Interior Features

Being the most expensive of the lot, Hyundai Grand i10 is the most feature rich hatch boasting of rear AC vents, keyless entry, 1GB music storage, cool glove box and electronically foldable rear view mirror.

Ford Figo, too, is equipped with pretty decent list of features like speed-sensing audio system, keyless-entry, largest AC compressor (among the four),  rapid deceleration warning and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity option.

Third in the list in terms of comfort and convenience is Chevrolet Beat that comes with nicest cabin design and first-in-class digital/analog instrumentation cluster.

All the vehicles have Bluetooth connectivity except Chevrolet Beat but as far as Celerio diesel is concerned, there is nothing out of ordinary although you do get the basic facilities.

Engine

As far as diesel engine size and displacement is concerned, Celerio diesel is the least powerful of the four hatches with a 2-cylinder DDIS125 engine that works with a displacement of 793cc. On the other hand, you have Ford Figo that uses a 1.4 DURATORQ TDCI engine with a displacement of 1399cc and is the most powerful among the four while Hyundai Grand i10 comes at the second spot with a 1120cc 1.1 U2 CRDI engine that is backed by 3 cylinders. Chevrolet Beat runs on the 1.0 XSDE SMARTECH engine that works with a displacement of 936cc.

In terms of respective power output, Hyundai Grand i10 dissipates the highest power at 70bhp whereas Ford Figo is pretty close to it at 67.1bhp. Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel churns away the least power with 47bhp while Chevrolet Beat falls at third spot generating 56.3bhp power. In terms of torque, Hyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo are again tied at 160Nm while Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel delivers 125Nm and Chevrolet Beat delivers 142.5Nm. All the five hatch use 5 speed manual transmission system.

Mileage

This is where Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel scores well giving a fuel economy of 27.62kmpl, highest in the country and higher than what the other three hatches have to offer. Following Celerio diesel is Chevrolet Beat that returns 25.44kmpl and Hyundai Grand i10 that delivers a mileage of 24kmpl. Ford Figo manages to garner a fuel economy of 19.99kmpl.

Price

This is a vital aspect especially from the point of view of the Indian buyer and Celerio diesel manages to stand out as the cheapest diesel hatch in the country as well with the price tag ranging between Rs 465,000 and Rs 571,000. Ford Figo is also quite economical with a starting price of Rs 506,000 although its top trim is priced at Rs 635,000. Chevrolet Beat is priced between Rs 510,000 and Rs 630,000 whereas Hyundai Grand i10 comes between Rs 555,000 and Rs 674,000.
