Vilasrao Deshmukh's "Maharashtra: Vision 2010"
Not very long ago, Maharashtra reigned supreme among India's states. However, in the second half of the 1990s, the state's finances were in a shambles, and industrial progress almost ground to a halt. Major business houses began launching new projects in other states. Many foreign investors steered clear of Maharashtra and looked for greener pastures in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu that lay thrust on New Economy sectors like information technology, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

Vilasrao Deshmukh, Maharastra's chief minister, is keen on regaining the state's lost glory. He recently toured the United States in a bid to convince foreign investors that Maharashtra is their natural destination.

On Monday, July 10, Deshmukh unveiled his Vision 2010 for Maharashtra at the Indian Merchants Chamber, Bombay.
