Janmashtami Special

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is one of India's greatest exponents of the flute. To his listeners the music that emerges from his bansuri is reminiscent of the divine flute of Lord Krishna.

For the last 15 years the maestro has organised a special offering to Lord Krishna on the occasion of Gokulashtami through his music. He begins the celebrations at midnight after an offering to the Lord with a dozen of his students.

"I wanted to build a temple for my Lord since childhood, but only after I bought the place in Mumbai could I fulfill my dream of building my own Vrindavan. I believe that God visits my house every night, and I thought I should spend at least one every year with him," he says. The marathon music session lasts for over 12 hours, with only a break for a paan.

rediff.com presents a glimpse of this unique event on the occasion of the birth of Lord Krishna.
